And so it happened. I returned to Amsterdam (Sep 2021), to study. Perhaps it was my biological “I don’t want to be the oldest at uni”-clock ringing (as I realised kids out of high school can be as young as 17!) or could it simply be so that the timing was right? Because what could possibly be better than joining a bachelor’s degree as a way to relax, explore Europe and grow as a human being for the upcoming three years?
This means a whole lot of things;
- I am (almost) living full-time in NL again
- My freelancing work is on slow-mode
- I am learning a bunch of cool things while enjoying the atmosphere of the ridiculous amount of UvA Campuses
I absolutely adore that UvA is spread around Amsterdam. Coming from a small town, the smaller campuses (but yet big and plenty) create a pleasant, comfortable feeling. Embracing smaller campuses instead of being eaten by one, giant, block of concrete.
But what am I going to use my degree for?
I am studying Media and Culture, and I believe it is the perfect integration of my previous partly practical degree and experience. The theory I work with at UvA I will be able to apply into my creative work, creating a better understanding with my preknowledge of the technical aspect. I am convinced this will be the end not only result in great research skills but also up my production value.
I have already learned a lot, ranging from research skills, implicitly and explicitly analysing film and developing my understanding of media theory. And of course, with theory and seminars, I subconsciously improve my communication skills, something I honestly did not expect. But it’s a great bonus, I believe everyone can benefit by practising effective communication. During my upcoming time, I hope to on the side further improve storytelling and narrative and further apply that to my productions. Perhaps that should be a secret, but what makes a good production is storytelling. I will never get rid of storytelling because even if it might not be noticeable at first, answering with a narrative is what subconsciously captures the audience. Spoken like a true artist, huh?
I am incredibly excited to continue my studies, even though I sometimes miss diving headfirst into the artist-ocean. Luckily, I have some fun projects planned on the side.
