Examination Project: Stress for Success

Young people are more stressed. But why do we have to be stressed?
And what can I learn about stress?

That’s where I started out with this project. It was August 2020, and it was time for me to produce my examination project, a short documentary, shot by a one-man team; – me, Caroline. 😉

Gymnasium: Gutegymnasiet

Category: Production, Documentary

Date: Spring 2020

Thank you,

Sara Nilsson, who was my first subject to ever be interviewed in front of a camera. Helena Sjölundh from Stressmottagningen who explained stress wonderfully, and my old school, Gutegymnasiet.

How I Did It

Young people, students, are more stressed. And that is a fact. Perhaps that’s why I felt drawn towards a scary, yet always hunting, subject. I knew I wanted to produce some kind of short documentary-style film, but I was doubting between medieval female warriors and stress

Chapter 1: How do I do?

I had never made a short film like this before. I went nose-first into books, how do I interview people? I have never interviewed people properly before! and then I went online. Mini-courses, lectures and panels with professionals. How do I make this good? I made a plan, a production schedule. Structure and organization through the research and production were extremely important to me, as my normal courses kept going along as normal.

Chapter 2: Rejection

Finding participants is not easy. I was covered in research material, reports and statistics, course literature about psychology, and I were sending out emails as if my laptop was on fire. I wanted tons of interviews. I wanted tons of facts. But that’s not how this worked out. I had to reject a lot of my research and focus on more than just numbers. Because who can feel with some numbers, versus truly understanding a human story? Luckily, I found Sara and Helena, the first people I ever interviewed with a camera.

Chapter 3: Conclusion

It was spring. Corona had struck. I could no longer go to campus. I was stuck in front of my PC and my small microphone. I suddenly realized that I had no idea what to do with the audio. Somehow, I managed to assembly everything, and through the way, I became a better editor and learned a lot. There are many things I would do different later, but this is what I made as my examination project. And my conclusion? It is not all about numbers, and yes, the future is scary, and fear can take place in many ways. But one thing is sure, the future does worry the young
